Fire
the Saddle is five people from Kentucky. Tory Fisher
(guitar, vocals), Mick Sullivan (guitar, banjo, vocals),
Rob Collier (bass), Joey Burchett (mandolin, fiddle), and
Jason Bemis Lawrence (drumset) have been crafting and crooning
in their hometown of Louisville since 2001, much to the
satisfaction of their large and loyal audiences.
Citing
influences from the Band, John Hartford, Freakwater, Neil
Young, and thousands more, Fire the Saddle has blended
it all into an original and refreshing sound. As
soft and sweet as they are rebellious and rockin’,
their songs of friendship, love, and joy perfectly balance
their others of grief, loneliness, and love on the rocks.
Sharing
bills with such important figures as Cathy Irwin of Freakwater,
My Morning Jacket, Hem, the Two Dollar Pistols, Bobby Bare,
Jr., Tift Merritt, and Splitlip Rayfield, they have pleased
many audiences, bringing with them their own homegrown,
grassroots following. The band’s regional touring
in 2004 has also attracted a loyal fan-base across Kentucky,
Ohio, and Indiana.
Fire
the Saddle’s recent hometown release party for their
second full-length CD, Four Feet Off the Ground,
was the first time in ten years that the legendary club
Rudyard Kipling had to deny some audience members entry
because of overcrowding. The Courier-Journal of
Louisville listed them as the number one draw at the Rudyard
Kipling for 2004. Not bad for a place that housed
Ralph Stanley, Ray Davies, Sam Bush, and Vince Gill, as
well as helped launch the careers of such acts as Carter
Wood, Jonell Mosser, and Alan Rhody.
Regulars
on the respected WFPK Louisville, Fire the Saddle’s
no longer available first album Sometimes It Ain’t
the Horse sat on their Top 25 chart for five weeks,
along with getting frequent air time on radio stations
in Lexington and Indianapolis. Undoubtedly, their
progressive new record, which in its first week of release
topped the sales list at Ear X-tacy Records, will do the
same.
